Sovereign Secure Access FAQs

What is Sovereign Secure Access (SSA)?
SSA is an award-winning, state-of-the-art security feature designed to protect you and your personal information against identity theft and account fraud. SSA does this by attempting to “recognize” your computer and you, and then displaying a familiar image and phrase to assure you that you are logging into an authentic Sovereign Bank service.
Why is SSA important to Online Banking?
Because Sovereign is committed to protecting you and your personal information against identity theft and account fraud, we have made SSA a required part of the login process. SSA first helps to ensure that only you can access your Online Banking data. It then assures you that it is an authentic Sovereign Bank service, and not a fraudulent site designed to capture your confidential information.
What do I need to do to enroll?
When you enroll into Online Banking you will be asked to register in SSA.  After completing registration SSA will attempt to recognize your computer each time you begin to login and enter your User ID. If it does, it will display the Personal Security Image and Phrase you chose during SSA registration and prompt you to enter your Password. If it doesn't, it will present a challenge question you selected during registration, which you must answer correctly in order to proceed.
How is SSA more secure than only a “User ID” and “Password”?
SSA adds three security elements to the existing User ID/Password login process. It first, attempts to “recognize” your computer hardware. If it doesn't, it requires that you answer a challenge question only you should be able to answer correctly. Once SSA is confident that it is indeed you logging in, it assures you that you are logging into an authentic Sovereign Bank service by presenting a Personal Security Image and Phrase you selected during registration.
I'm an existing Sovereign customer. Have my Online Banking User ID and Password changed?
No. You will continue to use the same User ID and Password you currently use to access your account(s). SSA simply provides an additional layer of security protection.
What are the requirements for selecting my Personal Security Image and Phrase?
You must select a Personal Security Image from among the choices presented during SSA registration, and your Personal Security Phrase cannot exceed 30 characters.
Can I change my SSA personal security image, phrase, and challenge questions?
Yes. You can change any of these by selecting “Change Login Preferences” during an Online Banking session.
Can I access Online Banking from more than one computer?
Yes. If you attempt to login from a computer that we do not recognize you will be asked to answer a challenge question, and then be given the option to register that computer. Once a computer is registered, it will be recognized the next time you use it to log on.
I share my computer with someone else who also uses Sovereign's Online Banking. Can more than one person login from the same computer?
Yes. Any number of Online Banking users may login from the same computer, but none will have access to any other's account information. Be sure to never to share or write down User IDs, Passwords, or answers to challenge questions.
I already have anti-virus software and a personal firewall. Do I still need SSA?
SSA protects against identity theft or fraudulent account activity arising from lost or stolen identifying information such as Online Banking User IDs and Passwords. It does not replace anti-virus and personal firewall software that protect against dangers such as viruses, trojans, or worms. Up-to-date security programs are the best defense against these online threats.
Does SSA require “cookies”? How do I turn on my browser's cookies?
Yes. Your Web browser's cookies must be enabled in order for SSA to function properly. It's the cookie on your computer that enables SSA to “recognize” it.

Below are instructions for enabling cookies on the most popular browsers. If you need further assistance, please call 877-SOV-BANK (768-2265) to speak with an Online Banking Representative.
